A collage of news reports covering a Manhattan office shooting. The headline reports an NYPD officer killed and three others dead in a Midtown office building, with additional details about the incident. A smaller image shows office workers in a high-rise Manhattan office, surrounded by furniture and armaments, with staff trying to prevent a gunman from entering the office.

Every single time we conduct a training, mass casualty incidents have occurred within a few days. Sometimes, during the training event!

It’s a fact, complacency kills. Don’t let your teams be lured into a false sense of security! The full spectrum of incidents is occurring all around us.

It’s critically important to:

  • Maintain good situational awareness

  • Continually reinforce the “why” for your teams

  • Remain agile and adaptive as an organization - ensuring that your strategies and tactics are relevant in the current operating environment

We use three tools to keep our teams sharp!

  • Incident tracker (Internal, Local, Regional, National)

  • Photo brief

  • Storyboards

Security teams and leaders benefit from professional learning communities. Share your story! If you have an incident that highlights best practices and lessons learned that you are willing to share,
please submit it here!

Every incident, event and near miss should be followed by an After Action Review (AAR.) We capture the nature of the incident and the sustains and improves on a storyboard.

This allows us to have historical documentation of the incident, to cross pollinate lessons learned and to have an off the shelf repository of incident scenarios with real-world lessons learned. These storyboards can quickly be used for training, leader conversations or table tops.

Do not miss the opportunity to capture those life changing lessons learned! Make AARs a way of life!
